India recorded a 14.6% increase in beer consumption in 2024, the fastest growth among the world’s 25 largest beer-consuming countries. Consumption reached approximately 3.44 billion litres, up from 3.00 billion litres in 2023. That makes India a compelling market for beer brands looking at Asia, although its opportunities vary considerably by state, style and sales channel, according to Kirin Holdings.
The growth is also creating room for beers at different price points. India’s largest brewer, United Breweries, reported 6% overall volume growth and nearly 32% growth in its premium segment for the financial year ended March 2025. Its premium portfolio then grew 46% in the April–June 2025 quarter, compared with 11% overall volume growth for the company. These are United Breweries’ results, not growth rates for India’s entire premium beer market, but they strongly indicate where a major brewer is finding momentum.

Maharashtra, Karnataka and Goa feature prominently in recent premium beer launches and sales reports. United Breweries said Heineken Silver grew 39% across its key markets in FY2024–25, reporting increases of 22% in Mumbai, 65% in Goa and 54% in Karnataka. These percentages reflect one brand's performance in those markets; they should not be read as statewide beer consumption growth.
West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh are also worth watching. United Breweries launched its premium strong beer, Amstel Grande, in both states as well as Maharashtra. It reported that the brand reached 5% of West Bengal’s premium strong beer segment within three months. That demonstrates a successful launch for the brand, while leaving the broader growth rate of the state’s beer market unanswered.
For an international brewery, the practical lesson is to build an India plan state by state. A brand’s availability, price, and route to retailers can change across state borders. A distributor with access to the right state and channel may matter more than a broad claim of nationwide coverage.

Premium lager and lighter styles
United Breweries credits Kingfisher Ultra and Heineken Silver with significant premium growth. It reported 38% growth for its Kingfisher Ultra portfolio in FY2024–25, while Heineken Silver performed particularly strongly in its cited markets. Crisp, premium beers therefore have clear evidence of demand within that company’s portfolio.
Premium strong beer
Strong beer remains commercially important in India, and brewers are developing more premium offers within the segment. United Breweries positioned Amstel Grande as a premium strong beer, while Carlsberg describes Tuborg Strong as a driver of its growth in India. This is a category international brands should study carefully: a premium proposition does not necessarily mean a low-strength or European-style lager.
Wheat beer, pilsner and speciality beer
There is also visible retail and importer interest in styles beyond mainstream lager. Bengaluru-based importer CIRO, for example, lists German wheat beer, pilsner and lager in its portfolio. Madhuloka’s retail beer catalogue includes products ranging from strong beer and stout to Hoegaarden Rosée. These listings demonstrate the growing availability and variety of wheat beer, stout, and craft beer across the market, highlighting an increasingly diverse beer landscape.

Premium liquor retail offers a way to put packaged beer in front of consumers browsing across styles and price points. Retailers such as Tonique and Madhuloka display imported and domestic beers in their catalogues. Availability is local, so brands should check each retailer’s relevant stores and state before planning a listing.
Hotels, restaurants, bars and clubs offer a different route: consumers can discover a beer through a menu, food pairing or recommendation. VBev explicitly identifies both hospitality accounts and premium retail among the channels it serves. For a higher-priced imported beer, these accounts may be useful places to establish a clear occasion for drinking it. That is a route-to-market recommendation, rather than a measured claim that the channel is growing faster than retail.

India’s beer market offers significant growth potential, supported by strong national consumption gains and rising demand for premium products. However, the opportunity is not uniform across the country. State-level regulations, distribution structures, pricing and consumer preferences can differ considerably, making a focused market-entry strategy essential. The premium segment is also broad. A lighter lager, premium strong beer, craft product or imported speciality beer may appeal to different consumers and require different retail, hospitality and distribution partners. Brands should therefore avoid treating India as a single market. A practical approach is to begin with a small number of priority states, identify importers and distributors with relevant channel experience, and test the product’s pricing, format and positioning with selected retailers or hospitality accounts. Building market knowledge in this way can help brands refine their offer, strengthen local partnerships, and create a more sustainable path for expansion in India.
