For breweries looking to grow in Asia, understanding local consumer preferences is just as important as producing great beer. While premium lagers remain the foundation of most Asian beer markets, each country is developing its own unique craft beer culture, driven by local tastes, premiumisation, and changing consumer behaviour.
Japan remains one of Asia's most advanced beer markets. While premium lagers from major brewers such as Asahi, Kirin, Suntory, and Sapporo continue to dominate, the country's craft beer sector has matured significantly. Breweries such as Hitachino Nest Beer, YOHO Brewing, COEDO Brewery, and Baird Beer have helped introduce consumers to styles such as pale ales, IPAs, white ales, stouts, and seasonal specialties. Japanese consumers tend to value balance, drinkability, and beers that pair well with food, which is why premium lagers, pale ales, and Belgian-inspired wheat beers continue to perform strongly.

Hitachino Nest Beer Espresso Stout from Japan also won the best beer from Japan at the recent London Beer Competitions.
Japan remains one of Asia's most mature beer markets. Premium lagers continue to dominate through major breweries such as Asahi (www.asahibeer.com), Kirin (www.kirinholdings.com), Suntory (www.suntory.com), and Sapporo (www.sapporobeer.jp). However, the craft segment continues to gain momentum, particularly among younger urban consumers.
Leading craft breweries such as Hitachino Nest Beer (www.hitachino.cc), COEDO Brewery (www.coedobrewery.com), Baird Beer (www.bairdbeer.com), and Yo-Ho Brewing (www.yohobrewing.com) have helped popularize pale ales, IPAs, white ales, porters, and seasonal specialty releases. Consumers increasingly seek beers with strong craftsmanship, premium ingredients, and food-pairing appeal.
South Korea has become one of Asia's most exciting premium beer markets. While domestic brands such as Cass and Terra remain dominant, imported and craft beer consumption has grown substantially.

Leading craft producers include Magpie Brewing, Amazing Brewing Company, and Gorilla Brewing. Hazy IPAs, wheat beers, fruit-forward ales, and premium imported lagers are among the fastest-growing segments.
Importers such as Beervana Korea and various speciality distributors have helped expose Korean consumers to global craft beer trends, making Seoul one of Asia's most innovative beer destinations.

This collaboration release from Gorilla Brewing and Kyoto Beer Lab perfectly captures one of the fastest-growing trends in Asia's craft beer scene: locally inspired, culturally relevant innovation. The Matcha Yuzu Sour combines two iconic Japanese ingredients—matcha and yuzu—into a modern sour beer that appeals to consumers looking for unique flavour experiences beyond traditional beer styles.
Rather than simply following global craft beer trends, breweries across Asia are increasingly creating products that reflect local ingredients, regional tastes, and cultural identity. Limited-edition collaborations like this help breweries stand out in a crowded market while attracting younger consumers who value discovery, authenticity, and shareable experiences. As Asian craft beer continues to mature, beers that successfully blend international brewing techniques with local flavours are becoming some of the most exciting products driving growth across the region.
China remains the world's largest beer market by volume, but the most interesting developments are increasingly taking place in premium craft, flavour innovation, alternative beverage formats and regional brewery ecosystems alongside continued premiumisation.
Major breweries such as China Resources Snow, Tsingtao Brewery (www.tsingtao.com.cn), Budweiser APAC (www.budweiserapac.com), and Yanjing Beer (www.yanjing.com.cn) continue to dominate volume sales. However, a growing craft beer movement has emerged in major cities.
China's craft beer market continues to evolve rapidly, with breweries such as Mahanine, NBeer, 18 Brewery, Paper Plane and a growing number of regional producers helping shape consumer trends. While IPAs and wheat beers remain important categories, breweries are increasingly experimenting with fruit-pulp (果泥) beers, tea beers, beer-based cocktails, cider hybrids and RTD-inspired products. OEM production has become a significant part of the market, with German-style wheat beers remaining one of the most widely produced and consumed craft styles.
While premium lager continues to drive significant volume, many of the fastest-moving trends are now occurring in fruit-forward beers, tea-infused products, beer cocktails, cider hybrids and premium craft offerings that appeal to younger consumers seeking new drinking experiences.

Master Gao Beer Co. was launched in 2008 in Nanjing, it represents high quality beer and also gives full expression to it's motto "brew free".
Vietnam's beer culture is deeply rooted in social drinking, but craft beer has transformed the premium segment over the last decade.
Leading breweries include Pasteur Street Brewing Company, Heart of Darkness Brewery, East West Brewing Co, and 7 Bridges Brewing. These breweries have introduced consumers to IPAs, pale ales, wheat beers, stouts, and tropical fruit-infused styles.
International breweries continue to see Vietnam as one of Asia's most attractive growth markets due to its young population, rising incomes, and growing appetite for premium beer experiences.

Singapore punches well above its weight in the beer industry. While small in population, it has become one of Asia's most influential beer markets and a key launchpad for international brands.
Craft breweries such as Brewerkz (www.brewerkz.com), Lion Brewery Co (www.lionbreweryco.com), and Little Island Brewing Co (www.littleislandbrewing.co) have built strong local followings. At the same time, importers such as Beer Force (www.beerforce.sg), The Drinking Partners (www.thedrinkingpartners.com), and Pacific Beverages (www.pacbev.sg) bring hundreds of international craft beer brands into the market.
Consumers actively seek Hazy IPAs, sour beers, barrel-aged stouts, limited releases, and premium imports, making Singapore one of Asia's trend-setting markets.
Thailand's beer market remains dominated by large domestic players, but premium and imported beers continue to gain share.
Craft breweries such as Mahanakhon Brewing Company (www.mahanakhonbeer.com), Full Moon Brewworks (www.fullmoonbrewworks.com), and Sandport Brewery have helped expand consumer awareness of craft beer. Popular styles include IPAs, wheat beers, pale ales, and fruit-forward beers.
Consumers increasingly associate premium beer with lifestyle, travel, and international experiences, creating opportunities for breweries with strong branding and packaging.
India's beer market is evolving rapidly as urban consumers seek alternatives to mainstream strong lagers.
A growing number of independent breweries across Bengaluru, Mumbai, Pune, Delhi and Hyderabad are helping drive demand for wheat beers, craft lagers, session IPAs and approachable premium craft styles.
Major importers and distributors are also helping bring international brands into the market, particularly in metropolitan cities such as Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Pune.

Across Asia, the common themes are clear. Premium lagers continue to drive volume. Hazy IPAs, wheat beers, fruit-forward ales, premium imported lagers and collaboration releases continue to gain traction as consumers increasingly seek variety, discovery and premium drinking experiences.
For breweries considering expansion into Asia, success increasingly depends on understanding these local market dynamics and building partnerships with the right importers, distributors, retailers, and on-trade operators within each market.
